The Platinum Group has added a new Gun Drilling and Milling Center to its Windsor, Ontario operations.
Platinum President Dan Moynahan says the new machine combines the best technical features for milling and drilling. ” This machine has more torque and rpm to help us enhance our machining operations, and broaden our tooling and mold capabilities.”
While many shops prefer to stay clear of deep-hole drilling, Platinum has always seen it as an area of specialization for more demanding and diverse applications. “Building injection molds for automotive lighting and trim is an area in which we have always excelled, says Moynahan, however we are now seeing increased growth in other areas such as consumer products, and electronics. With growth comes a responsibility to our customers to invest in the latest technology so that we can provide them with high quality products at a cost savings. We wants our customers to be able to count on us as a single source for their mold requirements.”

Milling axis on separate spindle for operations such as flattening, spot-facing, tapping. The main advantage of the center MF1000/2F is its versatility. In fact, a deep drilling center offering also good milling capabilities can strongly reduce the production time of a mould and minimize its handling among the different machines in the workshop.
No intervention required for transition between drilling and milling and back, thanks to the two separate spindles.
With one single origin a series of differently inclined drillings is executed on the whole face of the mould. Positioning after inclination is calculated by CNC.
Safety during drilling is granted by a double electronic check of the cutting parameters: if the cutting or pushing effort exceeds the programmed value, the machine stops drilling.
